I think it has merit as a method to reduce friction in an engine, but the amount of metal "burned" is minute at best. We're talking a few grams of material over the lifetime of an engine.

Besides, the engine would have to have traveled through many miles before accumulating that much metal and dirty oil. Most new engines are pretty immaculate.
